Abstract

Between 21st and 24th June 2004, Oxford Archaeology (OA) carried out a field evaluation at Castle Mews, Caerphilly on behalf of McCarthy and Stone (Developments) Ltd. Of the four trenches planned for the site, three were partially opened. Two of these were abandoned due to ground conditions and were not fully investigated. One trench contained a possible east-west aligned ditch of intermediate date. The fills of this feature were overlain by a possible post-medieval cultivation horizon, which was cut by a recent field drain. 19th/20th century made ground was present across the whole of the site to a depth of 0.8m - 1m below the present ground level.
