Abstract

In response to a request from Hodder Associates, acting on behalf of Bennett Property, Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) carried out an archaeological desk-based assessment of 74 – 78 Great Ancoats Street, Manchester (centred on SJ 84828 98499). The study aimed to assess the potential for significant archaeological remains on the site, and was required to support and inform a planning application for the redevelopment of the site. The study area contains two standing buildings (78 Great Ancoats Street and 57 – 59 Houldsworth Street), and a strip of land that has been cleared of structures, and used presently for car parking. The development proposals allow for the demolition of all standing structures on the site, and the erection of a mixed retail and commercial unit, which includes a basement. The site does not lie within a conservation area, and neither of the existing buildings are afforded any statutory protection against modification or redevelopment.
