Abstract
Between 4h and 5th January 2012, Oxford Archaeology East carried out an archaeological evaluation on Land North of Hubbards Loke, Great Witchingham, Norfolk. This took the form of seventeen 30m x 1.8m trenches across the proposed development area. A total of five shallow linear ditches, a couple of pits and a post hole were revealed across the site. No artefacts were recovered from these features or the subsoil and topsoil extending across the site. The trial trenches have exposed shallow drainage ditches in the investigation area that may, when associated with the lack of finds and the location of the site next to the flood plain of the River Wensum, indicate this site to have been part of a water meadow prior to the Enclosure Act of 1809. The cropmarks identified on the site can be attributed to a geological origin, dependant on the changes in sand and gravel content in the terrace gravels underlying the site.
